Regarde nos manchots!

We made amazing penguin art today! Look at how great they turned out. Ask me how I made them and what the criteria was. This morning, we went to the library and got new books. We also did a math talk around numbers on a hundreds chart that go diagonally. Ask me if I participated and which numbers I said. We had centres today. Ask me which my favourite one was. Au revoir, janvier!
A reminder from Mme that tomorrow is a PD Day and it is the last day to order yearbooks from Power Teacher.
From the office:
Report Cards Available Online Today at 3:15

A copy of your child's report card will be available online after 3:15 pm today through your Parent PowerSchool Account.  Full instructions on how to access the report are available in the attached PDF document: MyCBE-Accessing-Online-Report-Cards.pdf.  When you view the report card, you will notice the following statement, **Not Official Report Card **.  The reason for this is because the Official Student Record (student file housed at the school) contains the only official copy of the report card. This online copy is the same as the official copy the school will file.  From home you may save this report card as a PDF or print it for your own records.

Une bonne journée! Today, we made practiced the words of the week and played headbands using them. We also participated in two math talks about numbers and counting and used the reknreks with a partner. We continued on with the Friendology program. Ask me what the challenge is this time! We finished off the day making videos, talking about our vacation, music and gym!

Notes from Mme Harbinson:
-when doing home reading, please only read the book once a night. Spreading it out will help promote retention of the new vocabulary being learned.
-library day tomorrow
-hot lunch tomorrow
-no school on Friday
-literacy night next Thursday (see below)

Literacy Night Presentation at Varsity Acres School

Hello families,

Our ultimate goal as teachers and parents is to raise lifelong readers.

On Thursday, February 6th at 6:30 pm, parents are invited to Varsity’s first Literacy Night.

Parents and guardians are invited to Join teacher Mme Jennifer McCann for a session covering how children learn to read, what the current research tells us is most effective and important, and how to best support your child.  A question and answer period will follow.

Although this presentation is best suited for parents with students in K-3, anyone is welcome to attend.

Please register online: https://forms.gle/585rrbPeSx5Krtf2A if you are able to attend.  We ask families to please arrange childcare and that only adults attend.  Thanks!

Skating forms and reading strategies

Skating forms and another (very) lengthy set of reading strategies are coming home today.

Today, we learned a new song as well as our new words of the week. See if I can read them. They are definitely more challenging! In math, we learned about "rekenreks". Ask me what it is and how it works! In journal time, we worked on more of our silly sentences. We also did writing with our buddies about our winter vacation and worked to finish up our snowmen tuques. During science, practiced presenting our presentation on a sense with our classmates. Ask me what my sense is and how it keeps me safe. In gym today, we got to do gymnastics on the Canadian Climber! A great day!

Home Reading!

Let me read to you! Today, I brought home some reading to do and a booklet to track it in. I should be able to explain it to you but if I can't and Mme's (very) long email yesterday didn't best explain the tracking system, please ask! Mme also forgot to send home the literacy handouts she was planning on sending home. Tomorrow, she says! Today, we have a new letter/sound. Ask me what it is. In math, we went back a bit to examine number sense and talked a bit about how big numbers are compared to each other. Is 44 much bigger than 39 or a little bit bigger? We continued on with our family trees in Social Studies. After lunch, we read a book and I made a prediction on the ending. Ask me what I predicted happened to the alligator and the boy.
Notes from Mme: Thursday is library day as well as special lunch. Also, this is the last week to buy yearbooks from Power Teacher. Below are the words of the week. We did not get to them to read them as a class today as we were so busy setting up our Home Reading program. Demain!

Dear Parents/Guardians:

We reached our goal!

Mme says Bravo!! We reached our French goal and filled up our marble jar! These were earned by us speaking in French to our classmates, unprompted. To celebrate, we are having a pyjama day on Monday. We can also bring a "toutou" that is smaller than a basketball. Ask me how much I speak in class.
Today, we practiced reading syllables in our Jeu du Loup folder as well as the words of the week (le, la, les, un, une, des, je, il, elle, ma, mon, mes, ta, ton, tes). We played an addition game with a partner. We got some extra time with Mme Zdrill in music today, as well! Finally, we finished up some work from the week and our snowmen tuques.

A new video in IRIS today!

We uploaded a new video of us reading to IRIS today with our buddies. Check it out! We also planned a routine in gymnastics. Ask me what mine consists of. In math, we did some more addition. We started a new book about outdoor winter clothing in "français" as well. During journal time, we made up silly sentences using our winter vocab. Ask me about it!

New French sound today!

Ask me what our new sound is and which three letters make this sound! We went to the library today and most of us got out 2 new books. If I forgot them at home, I can still bring them in and get new ones tomorrow or Thursday. We have gym tomorrow if I want to wear something for gymnastics. In math, we started addition and practiced some addition stories. Ask me what this is! We did centres time where Mme reviewed reading strategies with all students. Finally, this afternoon consisted of a lot of art! Painting, tracing, cutting and gluing! Ask me about it!

Library day tomorrow - please return books in the library bag

A few notes from Mme: Following today's post are the words of the week. Please review these at home with your child two to three times during the week. These are the high frequency words they will see in their reading and the more they read them at school and at home, the easier they will become.
We are unfortunately unable to start our home reading today. There seems to be a discrepancy between the number of leveled books in the Grade One classrooms and we are meeting as a team this week to divide up the books more equally. Stay tuned...
Scholastic orders are due on Wednesday. If you would like to order something, please send it in with money or order it online.
Yearbook sales are open today for two weeks. Please order yours through your PowerSchool account.

Today, we made tuques for our bonhomme de neige! Ask me what colours I used and which pattern. I should be able to tell you both in French. In math, we did a mitten problem of the week. We also had gym and music and looked at "eu" in French language arts. Ask me one word with "eu" in it. (Hint: there are two numbers, two body parts, a colour and two emotions to name.)

Our snowmen are painted!

Although our snowmen were mostly white, they're now definitely white with a thick coat of paint! This took up a big portion of our day and the rest of the day was filled with a math doubles game, finishing up some work from the week, cleaning up the classroom as well as playing hangman and showing more classmates our pictures from the holiday.
Have a great weekend, Mme says! Looking forward to warmer weather next week!

"Math pattern" clothing day tomorrow

It's pattern day at school tomorrow! Stripes, shapes, anything with a pattern would be great!
Today was another inside day, of course, and cabin fever has definitely set in. Thank goodness our class had gym this afternoon to expel some of our energy! We also had buddy time, doing some more reading with them and talking in French about our winter vacation photo. During journal time today, we talked about how to improve our guided writing in our journals; Mme loves it when we use our imagination and write creative and detailed sentences. In science, we finished talking a bit about hearing and our 5 senses by reading a truly wonderful book on Helen Keller. Ask me what details I remember most from the book. (Maybe that she too learned French!) A truly wonderful example about perseverance!

Special Lunch tomorrow

Today, we did a lot of work on practising our oral French. We talked about the photo we brought in from our winter break. We asked Mme for the words we needed, she provided examplars and we needed to rehearse it with three friends. We will continue to practice it tomorrow and with our buddies before we begin our writing on it. We also used our family tree to practice oral French. "Ça c'est..." or "Voici...". We also had music today. In math, we continued on with our post-test to see how well we can skip count. Finally, at the beginning of the day, we made a new book about what we can do in winter.

Art gallery walk

Today, we did an art gallery tour. We examined different pieces of art, looked if they were photographs or painted, what colours we could see, where the art took place and what kind of feeling it provoked. We talked about what we liked and didn't like. In Science, we talked about our fifth sense, hearing ("l'ouïe") and needed to identify sounds just by listenting. In math, we did a final assessment of our skip counting skills and in journal time, we wrote using our winter vocabulary. We also have two new sounds this week; we worked on "ou" this morning. Ask me what sound it makes and a word that it is in. Today, we had gym with M. Trevor.

Brrr! Il fait froid!

Being this cold, we needed to stay in for both recesses today. It is expected that this will last all week (equalling cabin fever!). I was told that I could bring a special book or a game from home to keep me occupied during this time, if I so choose. (And my parents agree!)
Today, was mostly all about 'les bonhommes de neige'! With much parent help, we created our snowmen. Ask me how I made them. Over the next few months, I will be decorating them, talking about them and writing stories about them. We also had buddy time (where we read our new high-frequency words) and gym.
Following are the words (six of them this week) that are studying. Please use these to read with your child. Home reading starts next week and these are a great place to start! Any questions, please ask!
