Thank you to the parent volunteers today!

We had a great Halloween celebration this afternoon with our four Halloween centres in which we mixed colours, made estimations, played a strategy game and improved our French vocabulary. Again, thank you to the fearless parent volunteers leading the centres! We also had library today; if I did not return my library books today, I can bring them on Monday and return them then. We made a book today to bring home. We practiced reading it many times in class so please ask me to read it to you. Our class newsletter will come home this weekend. A reminder that Mme is at school for PD tomorrow but I am not. From Mme: "Happy Halloween and see you in November!"

Halloween tomorrow (meant to be posted on Wednesday)

Today, we met with our buddy class briefly to tell them about our new patterning project. Please ask me what mine is and what type it is (AB, AAB, ABAC, etc...).  We had gym and musique. We read a book about a spider who tried to convince a family to adopt him. Check my comprehension by asking how he ended up becoming a part of their family.

Library Day is Thursday

A reminder to bring back books on Thursday. Mme N is reminding us that you can keep your books for three weeks and then to please return them for others to enjoy.

Today, we had a presentation from the Gr. 3s. Ask me what they want us to start recycling. Today, we had gym, buddy class, and science (which we mixed some more colours!). We also wrote in our journals and played Bingo (ask me what kind of Bingo!).

New letter/sound today

Ask me what our new letter is today and what the gesture is that goes with it. In math today, we looked at how Mme corrected our patterning problems from last week. Ask me what I noticed: did I generally show a good understanding of patterns or was there an area in which I need to improve (losing track of the pattern in the middle, not completing the pattern, etc...)? We had a discussion on friendship and ways in which people show they are good friends and ways in which I am a good friend. During this time, we sit in an oval and roll a ball so that everyone has a turn to talk. We did some art with Mme Emily and we had music, too!
A message from Mme: "As the weather is getting colder, please make sure your child can do up his/her jacket for recess. If you could help with practice at home (if needed), it would be much appreciated. Merci!"

School Halloween Dance tonight

VASPFS is hosting our school Halloween Dance tonight, from 6.30-8.30.

We were very excited to put together our new alphabet "tapis" this morning. We also finished off our literacy centres. Ask me which one was my favourite. Ask me what our lockdown drill looked like today and how we knew when it was over. We also made our patterning bracelet that I got to bring home! There was one type of pattern it couldn't be. See if I can tell you which one was too easy for me now that I'm in Grade One! We finished a lot of leftover work and did our "tâches". A great but fast day. Mme needed to remind us all to work quickly and quietly so that we could get it all done!

Painting today

We had gym today and we did skipping centres! We explored colour through painting again, by making them darker. Ask me what colour we added. We had two literacy centres today. Ask me which ones I did.
Tomorrow is the Halloween dance. Mme Harbinson will send an email shortly about our Halloween celebration next Thursday.

Library Day tomorrow

We went on a hunt today at school. We saw many different things in our school ("our community") and some people/places in it that are important. Ask me one place and one person that I saw today. We practiced a fire drill in our class so that we are ready for tomorrow's school-wide fire drill. Review with me what is important to remember. In math, we added shapes into our patterns. We did music and PE. And ask me what the new letter and sound is.

Special Visitor

We were lucky to have Nurse Jen come in and talk to us about handwashing. Ask me what the first step to handwashing is and two examples of when I need to wash my hands. She used a black light to look and find the "germs" on my hand. We had our second fire drill today. Ask me if I remember what we need to do to get out safely and quickly and how I did today. The school will be having another one next week so that we can all practice again expected fire drill behaviour. In my pochette bleue today, I put in the shapes I made using pipe cleaners. Make sure I know how to say all my shapes in French!
"Have a great weekend!" says Mme. (And a note that library day is on Tuesday.)

30th day of school!

We are counting our way up through the days. Ask me how we keep track of our days at school (hint: there are houses that the tens and ones live in). In math today, we used geoboards to make different shapes. Ask me which was the most challenging to make. We also had some free time with them and we got creative. Some of us made letters or pictures! In gym today, we played toilet tag and practiced our skipping skills. We also drew and wrote more about our trees from yesterday and had buddy time. With our buddies, we are planning on making a video about numbers. Today was a day of preparation.

Mon arbre (My tree)

In Science today, we picked a tree outside that we will be tracking and drawing throughout the four seasons. Ask me what mine looks and feels like. (And if I named it!) We also had music today. In math, we continued learning about shapes, this time guessing them by touch in our "bas mystère" and making them with pipe cleaners. We also had a good discussion stemming from their "homework", what shapes we see in our house.
A reminder that Special Lunch is tomorrow.

Goal Achieved!

We, the students, reached our goal today in earning dix points for listening when someone is talking. "Bravo, les amis!" dit Mme! We had literacy centres today, started learning about shapes in Math, had gym and mixed Art with Science when drawing our hands in cool/warm colours. I have homework tonight: to find a shape that we've studied somewhere in our house. I don't need to bring it (that would be challenging!); I just need to talk about it tomorrow.

A notice came home today from VASPFS regarding our Family Halloween Dance.

Our Fall treasure collection

Look at what we collected yesterday! We found a lot of Fall treasures. We did a lot of counting (and gluing!) today! Gym was outside today, in the brisk sunshine, because of the gym being used for photo day. With our buddies, we finished our Thanksgiving "tarte à la citrouille" that show what we are thankful for. Some of us fully finished while others only finished the writing portion. Ask me how to read "I say thanks for..." en français as I've been practicing it in class!

Have a great long weekend. See you on Tuesday.

A great first outing for Grade One

Despite having snow covering our "Fall treasures", we were fortunate enough to have bright sunshine. We had a ton of fun playing at the playground and searching for signs of Fall! Thank you so much to our three parent volunteers - we couldn't do it without you! We will be hopefully doing this again in the other three seasons so that'll be perfect for those whose clearances haven't come through yet.
In language arts time today, we played a game with a bucket and a hockey sock. Ask me about "le bas mystère". We had library day and continued working on our Thanksgiving project.
Two reminders from Mme:
1) Tomorrow is photo day
2) We do not have school on Friday or Monday.

L'automne?!?

We suppose this is typical Fall weather for Calgary so even though it is snowing non-stop, we are still looking forward to our Fall walk tomorrow afternoon. Tomorrow's forecast shows "clearing with a high of 0 C". Please send along warm clothes for your child for tomorrow (snowpants, "winter" jacket, mittens, toque and snow boots) as well as a plastic ziploc bag that they will collect their Fall items in as well as a walkable snack (something that can easily be eaten and the garbage can go back in their pocket, if need be). Parent volunteers, I will meet you in my room at 12 noon so that we can go over the plan for the afternoon.

Tomorrow is library day. Please return both books.

Aujourd'hui, we had gym and music. Ask me how long I had to hold the plank for in our tag game. In Science, we talked about how Fall affects our environment (what happens outside) and animals. Brainstorm with me tonight as to what effects it might have on humans. Are there any jobs that a new season affects?

lundi le 7 octobre 2019

Today we had buddies and we started a Thanksgiving project. We have a new Science folder and put in an experiment on colours in it. In Math, we continued creating patterns. We had "éducation physique" with M. Trevor. Ask me what our new French letter is and the visual with it. (Hints: it's a vowel and our hand forms a cup that we drink from.)

Wednesday is library day. Please return both books so I can get new ones.
Our field trip is still scheduled for Wednesday afternoon even if it's chillier than today. I need to dress for the weather as I will be outside for two hours. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we are unfortunately down to only one volunteer now; if you have clearance and are able to volunteer, please email Mme as soon as possible at elharbinson@cbe.ab.ca.

What a lot of crazy hair!

A short day today but still a lot of fun! Our favourite parts: "Recess was fun!" as was "Seeing all the crazy hair!" "We started a new science experiment!" (Ask me what we're doing in it.) Some students say "Everything!" was the best. Have a great weekend!

Crazy Hair Day tomorrow

Today, we finished off our literacy centres from yesterday. We also had music today. In math, we created patterns using blocks. Ask me to tell you an example of one Mme Harbinson wrote on the board. In Science, we wrote what the primary colours are and how they are used to make the secondary colours. See if I can remember them without looking at the paper I brought home (it's at school still if I didn't yet finish it - but I can still tell you what they are!).
A reminder that tomorrow is early dismissal at 12 noon and crazy hair day.
